How To Delete Camera Roll Photos from iPhone
How To Delete Camera Roll Photos from iPhone
figuring out a way to delete / remove iPhone camera pictures from your iPhone (on a Mac) regardless of whether or not they have been imported into iPhoto.
It seems that iPhoto ‘08 (7.1.1) cannot do it —this is a weakness of iPhoto. Use IMAGE CAPTURE application, not iPhoto.
Quit iPhoto. Open Image Capture and choose the “Download Some…” option. You will then see all of your pictures stored in the Camera Roll on the iPhone. Select one or a range or even all of the photos you wish to remove, and choose Edit -> Delete. The selected photo(s) will be removed from the iPhone.
If you want to see something fun, with your iPhone plugged into your Mac, go look at the Camera Roll of pictures on the phone itself. Use the thumbnail index view. Then, when you use Image Capture.app to delete the pictures, you see them disappear one by one very quickly from the iPhone screen. other useful iphone tips

hi,
so, you cannot delete a photograph just from the phone? it has to be connected to a computer?
you can delete the photos, one by one, on the iphone. if you want to delete many at a time this is the best method.

Great tip. This is one of those things that’s been bugging me forever..and accordingly, my camera roll has just continued to get more and more cumbersome.
It’d be great if they’d fix iPhoto, but this works flawlessly for now. Thanks a ton.
Great tip! thanks alot
Yeah!
Thanks a lot for the Image Capture Tip.
You CAN delete all the iPhone photos at once.
I’d been all over iTunes and iPhoto and the iPhone, I could not believe that NONE of these allow you to delete more than a picture at a time, WHEW!
Thank you for the tip. Apple is really pressing their luck that their brand has been covering for their
shortcomings in countless areas. If they want to be perceived as being a premium company then they should
cover all the angles on things like this.
thank you very much for this tip, I was struggling to find out how.
THANK YOU! I was struggling to figure this out for a while. I can’t believe that iPhoto can’t do this! It’s ridiculous!!!
This procedure worked for me on my iPhone 3G,but all photo features crash now.
I removed all pictures from my cameral roll…cool. Now, I have no access to my pictures or programs on the iPhone. They (camera and photos) crash whenever I try to open them.
Image Capture did something to camera roll.Via iTunes I can still see my albums ,but not on the Iphone
Hope all this is clear and if someone has some feedback.
BTW, this the only way to remove picture from the iPhone “camera roll”
OMG THANK U SO MUCH! every month i add pix to my iphoto, but dont delete.. and dont reimport duplicates. so when i clicked “delete after importing” it only deleted a few….
this helped so much!! thank you!!
Hmm. I am looking for a way to delete the pics I uploaded to iPhone. Is there any way of doing this?
THANK YOU!
Apparently I downloaded too big of a file so my phone locked up every time I scrolled across this photo. I couldn’t even click on it and then hit the trash button to delete it out of the phone. I went through every program trying to find a way to delete it without needing to go to the camera roll on the phone, which as I said would lock up my phone!!
FINALLY! I got rid of the problem photo!
You are a phone saver!!!!
Not being able to mass delete photos I’ve already imported into iPhoto (or otherwise) has been bugging me since I got the iPhone. Thanks for this awesome tip!

thanks
where is IMAGE CAPTURE ? I can’t find it. Using Win and itunes.
Please help.
When you mention applications, for those not “i” pinheads, you should let us know what you’re talking about…
The only apps on the iphone for pictures are “Photos” and “Camera”. Are the apps you mention loaded up or Iphone defaults?
to access image capture, go to the help screen and type in image capture. there will be an option on there to access it. I don’t know of another way than that.
thank you a lot. this was bugging me for quite some time!
Yes, but what if I connect my iPhone to a Windows PC??? I have the same problem and want to delete all those no-good pictures in thew camera roll. what a clunky interface!!!

how do do this?

hi, my iphone is capturing pics but it is not keeping them in the Camera roll, when i need to check the pics i find only empty frame, when i press it it goes back to iphone main screen. and the the picture folder is always empty. can any body help please.
Yes, I got a similar problem as Mohamad. I downloaded the Snapture App from Cydia, but I found that the pictures that I took at there couldn’t be deleted!!! All the pix saved to the Camera Roll folder. Then, I immediately deleted the Snapture App and used back the normal camera app that came with the iphone, but no pics that were taken by normal camera were found in the Camera Roll. So now I end up having no camera function since I couldn’t find where the pics store at. NEED HELP PLEASE!
I have the same problem as Kitty. need help aswell. I keep deleting the same three photos taken with Snapture, and they keep coming back!!!!!!!
I think its a folder location issue, as when I keep taken pictures with Camera (default app with iphone) the thumbnail next to the word camera roll in the photo albums menu shows the photo i took with camera, but when you click on camera roll, it still shows the same 3 pics from snapture, plus blank sqaures equaling the number of photos i’ve just taken with camera! Please help.
I’m running 2.2.1.
I’m having the same problems as the previous few posts, need help! this is really annoying
Ok here’s the initial solution to getting your camera pics storing again.
Firstly I installed ‘finder’ - a program on the iphone which lets you browse the iphone’s files and folders.
Go to the following folder;
/media/DCIM
or
var/root/media/DCIM if your not using ‘finder’.
You’ll see a folder named 100APPLE, this folder contains the pictures taken using snapture. Delete this folder. then take pics using the standard camera program and they should save as normal.
I haven’t retried snapture as yet.
R,
That worked for me. Thanks for the tip. It looks to me like now I can use either the camera app or snapture now and both show in the camera roll and delete correctly.
I wasn’t able to use Finder for it but “iBrickr” works great! (http://cre.ations.net/creation/ibrickr)
1. I went into “Files” in the main menu.
2. On the side phone went to the folder:
/private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE/
3. Then I just deleted the photos set by Snapture one by one.
For non-Mac users…
1. Connect the iPhone to the computer
2. Launch Microsoft Camera & Scanner Wizard
3. Select the photos you want to copy to your computer, click “continue”
4. Check “delete photos from device after copy”
5. Click “Next” and after the photos are copied they are deleted from the Camera Roll
I just removed 420 images from my camera roll this way. No problems with the iPhone afterward - all seems to work fine.
Thanks for the tip, works great… Why iPhoto or Aperture can not do this is beyond me!
Thanks for this. It’s almost funny that something like this is so broken and iPhoto can’t do it. The image capture method is a good work around.
Awesome tip. Thanks for your help!
Obrigado R, pela dica!
Resolveu meu problema!
Instalei o Snapture em Japonês e baixei fotos no rolo, depois desinstalei e a camera original funcionou novamente.
Valeu!…
wtf. this doesn’t work.
it used to, but the damn update screwed with something and now it resets instead of deleting the pictures. i’m not going to sit and delete 150+ images by hand.

I have a different problem. When I take a picture with IPHONE
it goes into CAMERA ROLL. I don’t sync with
my windows Xp computer because it then considers
my phone a camera. Rather I email the pictures
to myself and then delete from CAMERA ROLL.
Then when I look at CAMERA ROLL there are
NO PICTURES. I then download those pictures
via email to my computer. Since latest upgrade
of phone to 3.1 and ITUNES upgrade my camera
roll has number (2) after it yet when I click on it THERE
ARE NO PICTURES in that album??
Apl-care hasn’t a clue and suggested I either reset all
settings or do RESTORE. I don’t want to do either.
I can still add pics to this roll and delete them
but the (2) persists even though it’s empty.
Any simple fix? Otherwise phone works fine
thanks
