How to remove applications from iphone for Mac user, who get iphone third-party applications installed into the Springboard home screen of their iPhone (not Safari web apps). This guide has not yet been updated for firmware 1.1.1 and only applies to 1.0.2

If you’ve installed a 3rd party application with Nullriver’s Installer, just use its Uninstall feature.you can remove apllications directly.

If you need to remove iphone application by the command-line, follow this example where we’ll delete an installed application called Tetris.appThe trick is to go into the .app directory, and delete the files first, then go up, and delete the enclosing .app directory.

1. In Mac Terminal, SSH into your iPhone

ssh -l root 10.0.1.4 [password] cd /Applications/Tetris.app rm *.* cd ../ rmdir Tetris.app exit

2. Restart iPhone. Application widget should be gone, no longer appearing on the Springboard.

another easiest way to delete iphone application directly on home screen:

navigate your iphone to home screen, tap and hold the application you want to delete, until it start to appear to wobble on the screen. you will find a small X in the upper left corners while the icons are wobbling . tap the little black X and you’ll get a pop-up dialogue box which warns “Deleting ‘application name’ will also delete all of it’s data” and gives you two choices :Delete or Cancel - so click “Delete” and you have removed the iphone apps. then press the home button, the x icon will disappear.

  1. Thanks for posting this, I had been searching the phone via SSH, not really knowing what to remove, and google did n’t help much.

Worked well for me, now installed Summerboard so I am not going to get this issue again.

  2. i just recently got my iPhone, and of course, went overboard with the whole “applications” thing. This helped me realize how to get rid of the applications when they were in iTunes, but my problem is that they arent showing up in the iTunes applications, except “Tap Tap Revenge,” and I think the rest may be slowing down my iPhone.

    Help me, please!

    Thanks,
    Sarah.

  3. It’s simple, way easier than the above, and I found out by accident. Lightly tap any button on your “springboard”until they all start shimmering, With the non-standard apps, there will be an X above the button. Tap it, which will prompt a confirmation, and tap yes to delete the program.

  4. Thanks!

  5. What if that doesn’t work? I have an app that is frozen with “downloading” under the icon. I’ve tried the shimmy, shutting down, etc. Still there. Help!

  6. Thanks Tom!

  7. ahh I tried pressing the springboard lightly and all it does is open an existing application. I can’t delete downloaded apps??

  23. Hello guys,

I came across this post by trying to find an information about how to get rid of some apps I happened to download earlier, but no longer need them (one of them is facebook)

The thing is I am often reading around the Web that I need to press and hold any of the app icons and they are supposed to start shaking and even an X should also be seen by that time on the corner of the icons that are not the pre installed.

Well, none of those things happen with my iPhone and no matter how long i keep my finger on any of the icons on the screen, none of the icons are shaking or showing an X at all… I do not know why…

    my iPhone model is A1303

Any help would be greatly appreciated…
    Thank you

  24. @iphone A1303, apps stuck in various downloading / paused states can usually be resolved by plugging the phone into your computer and allowing it to sync with iTunes. if you’ve jailbroken your phone I just typed up a guide on how to remove stuck apps manually over ssh/sftp: http://www.telepathicgiraffe.com/2010/06/03/iphone-app-stuck-on-paused-and-itunes-prompting-repeatedly-for-your-password/#content
