how to turn off GPS on iPhone 3G. sometimes, turning off GPS location services will improve your iphone 3G battery life. you can try this way to save your battery, if you do not use GPS any more or in low GPS signal location. from your iphone 3G home menu, go to Settings > General > Location Services >  turn off Location Services and that shuts off GPS. I find it work well, especially in low GPS signal location.
